MP3 Time error message: "ErrorCode: 0..."

Post by Dirk Schwenke »

If you see a message like "ErrorCode: 0 - Cannot determine the device type from the given filename extension." or similar while trying to play a (MP3) file, this is likely an audio codec problem on your PC.

This is a rare problem, but we have had some customers reporting it.

From the technical view, MP3 Timer is developed right correctly to work: It uses the MCI interface (Multi-Media Control Interface) of Windows with a standard component of Delphi 2007 (TMediaPlayer). This MCI interface uses the audio drivers installed on your system, so the problem is likely there.

Here are some possible solutions:

1)
The error is possible a problem with a missing (or malfunctioning) audio driver. Please check if the driver for mp3 is installed on your PCs: “Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec”. To check this:

Please go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager -> Sound, video and game controllers

There click on Audio Codecs and check if the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec is installed (this is for MP3 playback)

2)

If the codec is not installed, there may be a problem/corruption with the Windows Media Player installation.

The problem may be removed after installation of the latest Media Player

Or you could try to install the latest Microsoft Codecs.

3)
If you have the error with the text “initializing MCI” you may have a corrupt audio file. Please try another one. Also you can try to use other audio formats, for example .wav if mp3 does not work at all.

4)
Maybe you have some special audio or video software installed on your pc? Some people who have the same problem, suspect some third party tools may have corrupted the audio drivers of the system.

If someone out there has a good solutions to make it work in case of the error, please answer to this thread!

Thank you,

There is another idea what can solve the problem:

A user of us (Zappa) has reported the with WinXP and Windows Media Player 10 and could not play MP3s. On his PC was the K-Lite Codecpack installed which installs a ffdshow decoder.

He uninstalled the Windows Media Player and reinstalled it with the option ''Restrict ffdshow usage to whitelisted applications" and the problem was solved.

Not only K-Lite may be the problem, there may be other Codec Packs that also install ffdshow. To reinstall the Windows Media Player may solve the problem.
